Highs and Lows

In this 8th chapter of John we are introduced to several remarkable facets of Jesus’ person that are high points in the chapter but we will also see the depths to which those who oppose Jesus stoop.

Another rejection

From our vantage point in history we tend to miss a lot that went on in the life of Jesus. Our view is somewhat impaired by the perfectly correct (but incomplete) view that Jesus’ mission was to die on the cross for the sins of the world, conquer death and commission the disciples to preach the gospel to the world.  If this is all Jesus came to do then why did he spend 3 years preaching to the Jews and what exactly did he preach?

God is at work in this world as he brings about his plans and purposes. This is of great comfort to believers as we recognise that ‘all things work together for good’ (Romans 8). We’ve been studying the story of Joseph at our weekly bible studies and we note that Joseph said of his brothers ‘you meant it for evil but God meant it for good.’ If it is true that God is at work in the world we must then wonder why do bad things happen?

The start of rejection

There can be little doubt that Jesus came to inaugurate a kingdom of justice, righteousness and peace on earth: any straightforward reading of the Old Testament and the gospels could reach no other conclusion. John the Baptist was given the task to prepare the way and both he and Jesus spoke of the kingdom being at hand and of the need for preparation; repentance.

John 6: 25 -71

The crowd had followed Jesus around Lake Galilee. They had seen miracles, they had been miraculously fed and they wanted more! Jesus had crossed the lake (by foot!) and the crowd had sought him out once again. It was now time for some serious talking.

Jesus, John, a Samaritan woman and a Royal Official

John the Baptist had an important task and his work and words were clearly having some impact on the people of Judea and beyond. In this last part of John 3, we will see how quickly good diligent people can so easily mess things up!
